Sew a basic Japanese sleeve t-shirt pattern. A simple and quick to make sewing project.
This is the third part of the "sew with me basic t-shirt patterns" series. In this part I'm going to teach you how to sew the basic Japanese sleeve t-shirt pattern. This is the easiest of the five basic t-shirt patterns I have on the web because the sleeve is already part of the body of the t-shirt and the seam allowances of the sleeves are sewn like the bottom.
This is a loose-fitting pattern with short sleeves incorporated into the body. It is a very versatile model and from this pattern you will be able to make small modifications and make other garments:
- Turn it into a long-sleeved Japanese T-shirt by lengthening the sleeve by a few centimeters (narrow the end of the sleeve mouth so that the cuff is not too open).
- Modify the length and make a comfortable summer dress.
- You can add a pocket or two.
- Use a thicker fabric and make a sweatshirt.
Tips before sewing a basic ribbed T-shirt:
- Wash the fabric or steam iron it before cutting to avoid shrinkage during washing after sewing.
- Use a ball point needle (specifically for stretch fabrics), this way the fabric fibers will move sideways when the needle goes through the fabric and will not break them.
- Use the zig zag stitch if you use a flat (normal) machine.
- If you have an overlocker, use all four threads to sew and polish the seam allowance. In a single pass you sew and polish the seam allowance.
- For the double seams of the hem of the sleeves, bottom and neck, used a double needle specific for stretch fabrics and two spools of thread. I invite you to watch this reel from my instagram account, where I show you how to thread a double needle. It can help you to thread yours.
- Use the specific presser foot for stretch fabrics. The Teflon presser foot or the double-drag foot.. The Teflon foot is non-stick and moves over the fabric without stretching. The double-drag foot walks on top of the fabric.
What you will learn
- You will learn how to work with stretch knit fabrics.
- To sew assemble a collar and have it fit perfectly.
- To sew polish bottom and sleeves with a double stitch.
Practice with the same pattern
- The pattern has 7 sizes, from 36 to 50.
- The seam allowances are included and the sizes are separated by layers so you can choose yours and hide the others.
- You can print the model in din a4 format from home.
- Din a0 to be printed at the copy shop.

Note: The sewing process shown in the video is personal and indicative. This is how I sewed it. There are other processes to reach the same result and here I explain one of them. Include your own solutions or provide new details that do not appear in the video. It is possible that you have sewn something similar in some occasion and that you have done some part of the process in a different way. All options are valid. I advise you to try several and then decide which one you find more comfortable to sew.
