Securing the long-term value of your basic shirt

Despite advances in technology, tailoring remains a revered art. Tailors combine their manual skill with a critical eye for detail, creating shirts that are true works of art. Every stitch, every adjustment and every choice of material is made with the utmost care, resulting in garments that not only fit perfectly, but also reflect the personality and style of the wearer.

By learning all the techniques behind the making of a classic shirt you will develop a greater understanding and appreciation for the quality of well-made clothing and the craftsmanship that goes into it. This will lead to a greater awareness of the quality of the garments purchased and a greater ability to assess their value. You will be able to distinguish between all the shirts you will see on the market and see when one is superior to the others because it will stand out in its finer workmanship and finished details.

I can't say that my knowledge of the world of shirts is extensive because it isn't, or that my level of tailoring is close to that of a tailor, nothing further from the truth, but I can say that with the tricks I'm going to show you, you'll be able to make a very, very acceptable shirt. Most probably you won't get it right the first time, you will have to unpick and sew again several times but don't stop insisting and you will have to sew more than once to assimilate the whole sewing process but you will see how rewarding it is to sew a shirt from beginning to end.

Although it is apparently a simple garment, it hides many details that you should take into account.

What will you learn with this shirt pattern?

  • You are going to learn how to sew a collar with collar foot.
  • To sew cuffs with sleeve placket.
  • To sew sleeves.
  • You will learn how to sew a yoke with hidden seams..
  • To sew views on the bottom of the shirt.
  • To make a placket with buttonholes and buttons.

If you want to learn how to do all this with the same pattern you'll see in the tutorial, here's the link so you don't waste time and get your new long sleeve shirt pattern.

Things to keep in mind when sewing a shirt

  • When you want to sew a shirt, keep in mind that it will take a while. Take your time.
  • Think of a shirt as a garment that stands out for its details and for them to be sewn correctly. In a basic shirt the most important thing is how you sew it.
  • Be very meticulous in your tailoring. Sew calmly and if the result is not what you want, unpick and sew again.
  • A well-stitched basic shirt is essential because it ensures durability and long-term value.

Divide the project into parts

If you don't have a lot of time, divide your project into several parts, this ensures that each step is done calmly and well. I propose this division but you do it in the way you think it suits you best. Read the instructions first to get an overview of the whole process and you will see that there are things you can put together and parts you can sew on different days.

  1. Buy the material: fabric, threads, buttons, interlinings...
  2. Print the pattern and cut out the pieces.
  3. Cut the pieces in the fabric and interlining. Iron the interlining.
  4. Sew the collar.
  5. Sew the sleeves with the sleeve placket and the cuff.
  6. Sew the views, the yoke and join the front and back.
  7. Sew the shirt, collar and sleeves.
  8. Sew the buttonholes and buttons.

Note: The sewing process shown in the video is personal and indicative. This is how I sewed it. There are other processes to reach the same result and here I explain one of them. Include your own solutions or add new details that do not appear in the video. It is possible that you have sewn something similar in some occasion and that you have done some part of the process in a different way. All options are valid. I advise you to try several and then decide which one you find most comfortable to sew.
